December 2018 Book Reviews
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
An American Marriage is a novel about a young couple whose marriage is torn apart when the husband is tried and convicted of attacking a woman. As the reader, we know that he has been wrongfully accused as the narrator shows us that he was not there when it happened. And his wife and family know that he is innocent, but they struggle to prove it. When he finally is let out of prison after his lawyer proves he was wrongfully convicted (although it really doesn’t go into how this happened) his wife has moved on without him and we go through the journey that they take to figure out who they are now that he has been locked up for five years.
I thought this book showed an interesting perspective into prison, racism, marriage, and life. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Betrayal in Blue by Mark M. Bello
This is the third book in a series. I really liked the first two books in the series. This book was good but I didn’t like it as much as I liked the other two. This third book revolves around a veteran police officer who decides to go rogue and begin investigating a case without letting the feds or his higher ups know. When the man who he is searching for ends up dead. The police officer is the main subject and is tried for his murder.
As I said, this novel was good, but I preferred the first two. I gave this book 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris
This was my book club book for January. This novel is a collection of short stories. I feel like they are supposed to be satire but I just found them to be weird and uninteresting. Personally, I didn’t understand the point of most of them. I had a hard time staying focused enough to read them all.
I rated this book 2 out of 5 stars just because I couldn’t get into it. Other people in my book club loved it but I guess it just wasn’t for me!
