I am going to start this by saying that I am not a doctor and I have no medical training.  If you are experiencing migraines, please talk to your doctor for medical advice.

I wanted to share some home remedies that help alleviate some of the discomforts for me.

Peppermint Oil

I use peppermint oil for a lot of different problems but one of my favorites is when I have a headache.  I typically take ibuprofen when I have a migraine and if that doesn’t work I have a prescription med to use.

Occasionally after trying both of those options, I am still miserable.  When this happens I find that putting a little peppermint oil roller on my temples and sometimes under my nose helps alleviate some of the discomforts.

Ice Pack

When my medicines are not working, I also get some relief from ice packs.  Sometimes on the back of my neck and sometimes I put them on my forehead.

Dark Room

This one is common when I have a migraine that includes light sensitivity, it is best to eliminate some of the light.  Sit in a dark room while you wait for your symptoms to subside or for your medicine to kick in.

This is tough when I am at work because I teach in a classroom with bright florescent lights.  If I have no students or if it is bright enough outside I will leave the lights in my room off.

Sunglasses

If you have to go outside, make sure to wear sunglasses as much as possible.

Caffeine

Caffeine can cause migraines and it can relieve them, tricky huh?  I find that if I have too much caffeine I get a migraine.  I also find that I get one if I do not have enough caffeine.  Because of this when I feel a headache or migraine coming on, I take note of how much caffeine I’ve had that day.

If I find that I’ve had less than usual, I make a cup of coffee or tea.

Water

Dehydration does awful things to our bodies.  Often my migraines can be attributed to not having enough water.  When this happens I try to drink a lot of water to make up for it.  I try to drink a good amount of water every day, but sometimes it takes a migraine to remind me to make it a priority.

Nap

Naps fix everything, right?  I don’t know if the nap helps the migraine or just you sleep through the symptoms and wake up when the medicine and other treatments have kicked in.

Any excuse to take a nap is good in my book!

Chiropractor

I already go to a chiropractor.  I find that if I tell him that I have a migraine or have been suffering from frequent migraines, he will adjust me differently.  He has ways of helping relieve the pressure in my neck that could be causing the migraine.

**Again, I am not a medical professional, please do consult your primary care physician if you are struggling through migraines.  This post is not to be in place of medical advice.

Just some tips 🙂
