7 Things to Do This Summer
Take a Course
This summer you can take a course. I try to take courses often. Learning about teaching helps me stay with the research and up to date on all the new information. Personally, I use Learners Edge to take courses, their courses are reasonably priced and well designed.
Reflect on Your Year
What went well this year? What didn’t go so well? Reflect on the year that you had. Your successes, your failures, and everything in between. What can you do differently this year based on what you learned last year. Do you always feel rushed before homeroom so you may benefit from getting to school a little earlier.
Prep
After you reflected on your year, was there something that took up a lot of time when school went back that you could do ahead of time?
My plan is to spend a lot of time familiarizing myself with my students’ IEPs and create the support documents ahead of time. By “support documents” I am referring to checklists and “cheat sheets” that I create for my general education teachers to ensure that they are prepared to support all of my students in their classes. Especially the teachers that I don’t co-teach with.
Communicate
Have tough conversations with your co-workers now. This way you can rethink what you did as a team.
What about your co-teaching relationships went well? What didn’t go so well? Is there something you can do differently this year that will benefit your relationship with each other, and will benefit your students?
Shop Sales
I used to work at Staples, and I would always spend my summers stalking the penny sales. They don’t have quite the same amount of penny sales as they used to, but keep an eye out for back to school supply sales!
I know it’s tough to be shopping for school in June when you just got out. But if you see a great sale on something you know you’re going to buy, get it now and save the money!
Your wallet will thank you!
Read
Try to read some “teacher” books this summer. Use this time to get yourself charged up for the coming school year. Who knows what schools are going to look like in the fall, we are going to need all the extra pep we can get!
My reading list this summer:
Fish in a Tree by Linda Mullally Hunt
Why are all the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria
Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain
Recharge
You have worked hard this year!
Take some time for yourself. Do something that will fill your bucket and get you ready for the next school year.
Go to the beach, spend time with your loved ones. Do you favorite socially distanced activities that can allow you a safe but fulfilling summer!
