Tips for Keeping Yourself Motivated During Breaks
Summertime = No Motivation!
Like most teachers, I don’t take the summers off. For the past four summers, I worked for a company that puts on summer programs for kids. And this summer I am focusing on my blog, which a lot of people think means taking the summer off. But really, I spend about 30 hours per week trying to perfect my blog and social media. It is sometimes difficult to keep motivation.
Having the motivation to work during the summer, or during any school break, is difficult. You are usually drained from the school year, all of the students, and parents, and paperwork! It is so easy to just go sit at the beach every day and recharge by the sun. But for a lot of us, this is not an option. I need a second job to ensure that I can pay the bills. We all know that teachers are the highest paid.
Do Something You Love
We all love kids, that’s why we’re teachers, right? But, it’s okay to want a break. I liked my science job because it was a completely different age group than what I work with during the school year. During the school year, I work with 13-15-year-old students and my science camp was 5-10 year old. This was enough of a change for me that it was refreshing.
Some of the teachers that I work with teach summer school with the same students that they work with all year. I don’t know if I could do this, it is nice for me to have a break.
Some people need a break from students altogether, and that’s okay! You can go get a job waitressing, or in retail, anything that you want.
Schedule in Time to Relax
The school year can be exhausting. If you pick up a second job over the summer and work 40 hours, you will never get to recharge! Make sure you take some time off during breaks to relax. Whether it’s a week away with your family, or just a few days at the beach or pool. Even if you just want to go and binge watch the newest Netflix sensation.
It’s important to give yourself some “you time.”
Prioritize your Summer “To-Do” List
We all have them. All the things that we think we’re going to get done before the beginning of the next school year. If you set unrealistic priorities you are never going to accomplish them all and you’ll go back to school feeling like you didn’t attain your goals.
Prioritize your list. Make a list with your higher priority items towards the top. Even if you don’t complete everything on your list, getting the most important stuff done will make you feel like you succeeded.
