My April 2019 Book Reviews
This month I had grand plans of reading so many books over April vacation from school. Well, that didn’t happen and I am really going to have to pick up my pace if I want to meet my goal of 50 books in 2019! I am trying to mix more non-fiction into my reading so this month I got through one of each, fiction and non-fiction.
Burying the Honeysuckle Girls by Emily Carpenter
This was my book club book this month and I was not a huge fan. There were elements of this book that I found enjoyable but then there was a lot that I didn’t. It is the story of a girl whose family has a history of women dying once they turn 30. Now, she is about to turn 30 and she needs to figure out what caused her mother and grandmother to die so that she can stop the cycle. It appears as though it is going to be a story about family secrets and self-discovery.
Truly, I felt that there were too many characters that were hard to follow. The narration jumps back and forth through time between the different generations of honeysuckle girls and it was difficult to keep things straight. There were parts of the story that were difficult to believe because they were so over the top.
I gave this book two out of five stars.
Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop
I didn’t love this book. I found it to be very disjointed. It rehashed a lot of the same advice that you read in a lot of books that are about getting out of your own way. I didn’t really relate to the author’s writing style either.
If you read a lot of nonfiction, personal development books, this one probably is not going to provide you with a lot of new information. If you haven’t then this was an okay book with some good advice.
I gave this book three out of five stars.
