This year has been a learning experience for all of us.  If you have been reading my blog, you may know that I run my school’s drama club.  In March, when everything shut down, I had to give up on my dream of Beauty and the Beast this year.  But, with students missing out on so many things, I still wanted drama club to exist in some manner.

So, to the drawing board!

I created a Google Classroom for my drama club and tried to connect with them weekly.  We created challenges and I compiled the good ones and shared them with my principal.  As a former drama club director himself, he loves to see what we’re up to!

Create a Virtual Talent Show!

One of the challenges that I assigned to my students was a talent show.  I encouraged them to record videos of themselves performing a talent, any talent, as long as it was school appropriate!  This was a great way to allow the kids to show off something they are proud of.  Some of my students do drama for the social aspect, theses students do not believe that they are amazing singers or dancers.  I left the criteria open ended for these students.

Some of them showed their drawings, dances, played instruments, I even had one student do a magic trick!

It was a lot of fun to see their individual personalities shine through.

“In Character” Challenge

This was a lot of fun.  When my show shut down I had already cast the production and began rehearsals.  So all the students had already been assigned to parts.  I challenged them to record their character’s reaction to quarantine.  I have to tell you, Lefou is not doing well locked down!

The kids that participated in this challenge had so much fun and were so creative!  I loved watching their videos and they seemed to really enjoy watching each others.

Virtual Shows

I haven’t tried this one yet, but will probably look into it this year.  Some of the websites that I order my scripts from have been advertising virtual shows.  These shows are designed to be performed over Zoom or Google Meet, and can be rehearsed remotely.

These seem like such a fun way of still allowing drama club to happen!
